Can an unsaved photoshop file be recovered?
Yes. Simply, you need to go to this directory
(for Windows) C:\Users\***\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CC 2015\AutoRecover
(for Mac) User > Library > Application Support > Adobe > Adobe Photoshop 20XX > AutoRecover
where the Auto Recover folder is present.
The App Data folder by default is hidden and therefore you need to change the folder settings for this purpose. You will find the last used file in the Auto recover folder in .psb format, which you can open up to get back to that particular unsaved file.
Methods To Repair Corrupted PSD File Manually
1. Temporary Files
One of the most common reasons for PSD file corruption is when adobe Photoshop crashes, or PC is abruptly shut down.
Photoshop temp files can be huge with large projects, and if Photoshop does not close correctly, the files can be be left on your drive. To check for this, navigate to your scratch drive,
You can try to restore PSD files by following steps listed below:
Step 1) Open hard drive & select Document and Settings.
Step 2) Now, have select a folder which has your user name and then select Local Settings < Temp.
Step 3) Locate the files named Photoshop & open it in Photoshop.
Step 4) Now easily you can change the extension from .temp to .psd.
Step 5) Save the files.
2. Recent Tab
Sometimes, when I have lots of PSD projects, I may hit “save” button and accidentally save PSD file in a different location than I should have. And so I may have problems with finding my current project.
If you also face this problem, check the restore tab. To do it, open Photoshop, go to File tab, then click on Open Recent and search the required PSD files.
3. Restore Backup
The first rule (that I learned in a very painful way) – always do the backup. Especially if you work on very important projects…
So if you followed the first rule, you can try to restore your PSD files from a backup.
I personally store copies of important files on an external hard drive. During work, I save different versions of the project in separate PSD files. So in case of Photoshop crashes, and when the file can’t be restored, I’m able to use a PSD file with the earlier version of the project to continue my work (instead of creating the whole project from a scratch).
Also, you can use Windows backup utility to backup PSD files. Windows creates shadow copies of your files and store it as restore points. All you have to do is just enable the feature.
Check if your System Restore is enabled or disabled. To enable it, follow these steps:
1. Go to Control Panel and click “System Protection”
2. Under “Protection Settings”, ensure that it is set to “ON”
